Safe will not open? What to check before forcing anything
A safe that refuses to open is usually protecting itself, not failing. Forcing it turns a service call into a replacement, so work through the simple causes first.

Flat batteries in electronic safes
Electronic keypads run on batteries that die quietly. Symptoms are a dead keypad, faint beeps, or a code that is accepted but does not retract the bolt because the motor lacks power. Fresh batteries of the correct type solve a surprising share of call-outs.
Lockout mode after wrong attempts
Many safes disable the keypad for several minutes after repeated incorrect codes. Continuing to enter codes restarts that timer. Wait it out fully before deciding the safe has failed.
Handle, bolt and door pressure
An overloaded safe can push contents against the door, so the bolts bind even after the lock releases. Press the door inwards slightly while turning the handle. Handles themselves can also strip internally, which feels like a lock fault but is not.
When to call a specialist
Stop and call if any of the following apply.
- The code is genuinely unknown or was never handed over.
- The key is lost or has snapped in the lock.
- The keypad is dead on new batteries.
- The lock spins freely or the handle has no resistance.
- The safe is inherited and its history is unknown.
Non-destructive opening comes first
A specialist works through manipulation and correct override procedures before considering anything destructive, so the safe can usually stay in service afterwards. Drilling is the last resort, not the opening move.
