Car remote not working? Work through this before replacing it
A remote that suddenly stops opening the car or the gate rarely fails outright. Four things cause most call-outs, and three of them are cheaper to fix than to replace.

Start with the battery
A flat coin cell is the single most common cause. Battery voltage drops off a cliff rather than fading, so a remote that worked yesterday can be dead today.
Replace the cell with the correct type, make sure it is seated the right way round, and test at close range before assuming anything worse.
Check whether the remote lost its sync
Rolling-code remotes can fall out of sync with the vehicle or gate motor if the buttons are pressed repeatedly out of range. The remote still transmits — the receiver simply refuses the code.
Re-syncing or reprogramming restores it without any new hardware.
Inspect the physical remote
Cracked casings, worn rubber buttons and broken solder joints from being dropped are all repairable. So is a snapped flip-key blade, which is a mechanical fault rather than an electronic one.
- Buttons that need hard pressure — worn contacts.
- Works only within a metre — weak battery or damaged antenna.
- Nothing at all, on a fresh battery — internal fault or lost sync.
- One button works, others do not — worn contact pads.
Rule out the receiver, not just the remote
If a second remote also fails, the problem is on the vehicle or gate motor side. Diagnostics identify whether the fault sits in the receiver, the wiring or the body control module before money is spent on new remotes.

- Often yes — batteries, worn buttons, casings and blades are all serviceable. Replacement is the last option, not the first.
