How auto key coding actually works
Coding a modern vehicle key is two jobs in one: a mechanical job that shapes the blade, and an electronic job that convinces the car's immobiliser to accept a new key. Both must succeed or the car will not start.

The mechanical half: cutting the blade
The blade is cut to the vehicle's lock pattern so it physically turns the door and ignition. For smart keys with no blade, an emergency insert is usually still cut and hidden in the fob.
The electronic half: the immobiliser handshake
A transponder chip in the key answers a challenge from the vehicle every time you try to start it. If the answer is not on the vehicle's approved list, the engine is blocked — even with a perfectly cut blade.
Coding writes the new key into that approved list. On some vehicles it is a quick add; on others the module has to be accessed properly, which is where dealer level equipment earns its keep.
Why diagnostics come first
Running diagnostics before cutting anything reveals existing faults — a failing ignition barrel, a weak battery, an intermittent module — that would otherwise be blamed on the new key.
Spare key versus all keys lost
With one working key present, the vehicle can usually be persuaded to accept a second quickly. With no keys at all, access to the security system has to be established from scratch, which is why that job takes longer.
Testing before hand-over
Every function is checked before the technician leaves: lock, unlock, boot, panic button where fitted, ignition and a live start. A key that opens the doors but will not crank is not a finished job.
